My husband has been a printer ever since leaving school but has been unhappy with it for some time now. He was made redundant at Christmas (the place closed down). Since then he took on another printing job (big mistake - even worse than before!) but has now left. As printing is all he has done (all his life basically), he's not sure where to turn next. He actually wouldn't mind doing something not that taxing, ie leaflet distributor or something like that but any time he applies for jobs of this nature (you usually have to phone up), he kind of gets the impression that the person on the other end of the phone (after finding out what he's done in the past) just thinks he's desperate/over qualified and doesn't really want the job - even though he tries to explain he would really like to do this. They usually say they'll phone back - but then don't. Any advice on how to try and get around this? He'd also love to work with animals (doesn't mind getting dirty!) but not sure how to go about this either. Any suggestions? Seems you need qualifications for even the most boring of jobs these days! Tried applying for a postman job but it said you needed a driving licence (he doesn't) - why ?!!!
Have a look at the Learn Direct web site (sorry, I can't post links).
Just about every job you can think of is listed, with lots of good advice.
Your local Jobcentre could be of help, particularly if he's a bit out of touch with writing a CV or applying for jobs.
Your hubby is still a spring chicken and I'm sure he's doing the right thing by changing careers if printing made him so unhappy.
Good luck.
