I have read some of the questions here but mine is slightly different. My main industrial and academic qualifications are:
Post Grad Diploma in Publishing
BA (Hons) in Combined Studies
Advanced City & Guilds Cert in Graphic Reproduction
I have 40+ years experience in the pre-press area of printing, the last 20 in one company. Unfortunately my job is about to become redundant.
Q. What chance has a 60 year old with untried transferrable skills in the current job maket?

We have 3 glossies covering our area that are circulated freely and paid for by advertising.

I second tamborine on this one. I'm in pre-press graphic design, printing and publishing. In this recession there's very little out there by way of any available posts - and discrimination is rife - employers can afford to be extremely choosy, even for a minimum wage position.

The way forward for me has been to register as self-employed and get work that way. I fortunately still have a contracted job, but this is the only way to branch out and do something else, and to earn more.

I've been looking into setting up a local mag, they can be very lucrative and if you have the background to be able to do everything pre-press, and have print contacts - then you can operate that easily by yourself. If you know someone who is good at selling then that would be a great partnership to look into.
