There are some miserable individuals around, begrudging a mere £2.90 on every school child, on something that they can treasure for the rest of their lives.

In harder times than these, free commemorative mugs have always been given out to school children, The Coronation of King Edward VII, George V's Silver Jubilee, an Edward VIII mug, coronation of King George VI, and for the coronation of Elizabeth II, to name just a few.

The age some of them start drinking a commemorative beer glass might be more appropriate... but why not... some will treasure them

Bit of a blast from the past isn't it? Coronation mugs won't excite the youth of the nation.

What a shame nobody was forward thinking enough to offer badged memory sticks or something like that

I think it`s a bit pointless to be honest. Maybe they could just subsidise some and if anyone wants one, they can buy it for 50p. I`m not sure they`ll treasure them for the rest of their lives either. I remember when we were offered Silver Jubilee mugs. I didn`t bother to pick mine up (neither did my sister). I was at an age where I thought I was way, way too cool to queue up with the kids in the village square on collection day.

I've still got my coronation mug (Elizabeth 11 that is!) given free when I was at primary school but I think the idea is a bit dated now . People can buy one if they really want to.

There should be nothing. If someone wants to remember the leeching Royals then they should buy it themselves.

I'd not begrudge it, but strictly speaking, it is something the parents of other family should buy, rather than spend ratepayer's cash for gifts to some folks kids. It is my generous nature that allows me to turn a blind eye to inappropriate council spending sometimes.

We are talking Diamond Jubilee Mugs here, unless something drastic has happen to our Queen in the last few minutes.

At the Coronation went with some friends to do some rock climbing and couldn't be bothered to pick up a mug. Plenty of Republicans among the older generation too.
