I have recently started working in a care home for the elderly, iv been told i will have to do my nvq 2 but what is the actual qualification health and social care? and iv read that with that i could also work as a nursery nurse is this right? will i just be trained in careing for the elderly or will i be able to do other things with this qualification?

I believe that the NVQ you will need is the NVQ Health & Social Care . With that qualification you wouldn't be able to work as a nursery nurse, you would need a child care NVQ for that. The NVQ doesn't train you to do things, to get the award you have to demonstrate that you are already doing them, performing to certain national standards at Level 2. You will have an assessor and will compile a portfolio of evidence against the national standards - it takes from 6 months to a year to complete the award. PS, you have to study some mandatory units then some optional ones to suit your own job description - so your options might be around elderly care, but you could choose others if your employer agrees. An NVQ in a Care topic is recognised as a minimum qualification for much of the healthcare sector including the NHS so holding a level 2 (or 3 in due course) is a useful asset to have on your c.v.

The NVQ2 is no longer being taught, it is now a level 2 Diploma, I think that when you sign up these days you are given a choice of whether you want your diploma based on child care or the elderly, naturally if you chose the elderly course it will not qualify for child care. Yes it will be a diploma in Health and Social Care, it takes about 9 months to complete depending on the company who runs the course and the assessor, it could take longer, could be less. It isn't a legal requirement yet but one day im sure it will be.

Ratter is right - we still call it an NVQ because that this what people recognise, and the principle of portfolio-building etc is still the same.

In the NHS many people's job descriptions say that within the first year you will be expected to start your NVQ in relevant topic - etc.
