I haven't got a jar big enough for a cup - would a jug in a bucket do?
Question Author
yes, it will work..

I'll have to drill a hole in the jug won't I?
I'm not really allowed sharp objects.
What are your thoughts on what would happen Somya?

If you show that you have given this some consideration you might get some more helpful answers.
Question Author
it is an metal nut and you have to take paper or plastic cups..
so that a hole can easily be made.
You need not worry about the materials involved Somya just think through what happens.....the displacement of the water......

So, what do YOU think will happen?
Question Author
what you can do is, take a plastic cup, make a hole beneath it. Fill a jar with enough water so that the cup can be easily sink and put a nut (metal nut) in it.
Put the cup in that jug and observe the above questions!
Question Author
I think it remains the same..
Is that your answer for both questions 1&2? Any thoughts on q3?
Question Author
in both the cases. As it will be sinking. the place that it be taking would be covered as that much water will enter the cup. so the water level will remain the same.
Can anybody give me a good laguage of this principle ??
This is a terribly simple experiment that you could easily do at home. Why don't you give it a go?

Then YOU will KNOW the answer having proven it.
