Hi , my son who is in year 8 is learning about algebra and his homework for toight is about writing algebra in its simplest from ! please could you explain how to do this so i can help him ! His first question is 1. 3n X m Thanks from Jill

I've no idea what your question means and I'm guessing that the dearth of replies here means that others feel the same.

Is the "1." just before the 3n the number of the question?

Is the question "3n (multiplied by) m" ?

If the question is "What is 3n X m?" the answer is "3nm." The letters represent values and the lack of a space between n and m in the answer is taken to mean that the two values are multiplied together.

If you feel you want to help him but don't know how, ask his maths teacher - she'll probably be made up that someone actually cares enough to ask. Algebra is actually brilliant, as is the rest of mathematics.

Your son should know how to do algebra if he was giving it for homework. Too many parents are doing their kids homework and not letting the child do it themselves. This report was only on the news a couple of weeks ago. If he needs help he should be asking the teacher to give him extra help. It's a long time since I did any algebra and would not be happy if my kid asked me to help him when he has been learning it at school all day. He should know more than you.
