I have copied the following from the uni i work at about maintenance grants:

"From 2006 onwards, new full-time students in England and Wales will be able to apply for a Maintenance Grant of up to 2,700. This is a means-tested grant which does not have to be repaid. The amount you are eligible to receive will be assessed by your Local Education Authority (LEA). If your household income is around 17,000 or less you are likely to receive the full amount of 2,700. Partial grants are available for those with a household income of between around 17,000 and 37,420. If you are in receipt of benefits, you will be given a Special Support Grant instead of a Maintenance Grant."

this is a good website for finding out information about loans/grants: http://www.direct.gov.uk/EducationAndLearning/ UniversityAndHigherEducation/fs/en

but it is also worth checking your university you are going to's website (search under 'financial support') as most uni's will have scholarships and bursaries in place specific to that uni.
