I am biased as I was born and brought up there. Although I have lived in Scotland for over 30 years it is still "home" to me. In fact, I'm off down there next weekend for an early family Christmas do and to see the Boro play Arsenal.
To me it's the best place in the world but make your own mind up by doing a Google search or looking on Wikipedia. Or reply to this and I'll tell you more.
Be sure to spell it right though. It's Middlesbrough with only one "o".
Good luck to your son.

I saw the Location Location Location programme as well and although I have never been there so can't say what is is like. Everyone I have ever met from Middlesbrogh has been really friendly, so I think he would be made really welcome. also if it is the worst place in britain it is probably really cheap to live there, always good for students!!!
Hi Petal,
The university is right next to the town centre and about 10 minutes walk from the train station. Map link below.

When your son gets off the train he will need to use the underpass to get back under the railway. This leads to the main booking hall and from there he should take the left hand exit down the steps to Albert Road. Turn right and walk up Albert Road to the uni.
Hope the interview goes well.
