Becoming a teacher....but not in my degree discipline!!

I am wanting to become a teacher (pref seconday school, but would consider primary). I have a 2:1 degree, but it is in (cringe) Media Studies. I was hoping to teach RE, would this be possible with a media degree? I know i will have to enrol on a PGCE course, but i not sure if i would have a hope in hell of teacing RE with a media degree. The degree did cover topics such as feminism, marxism, post-modernism if you think that might be helpful to mention??

I've looked at the Edge Hill site (there are many others too)and it looks as if your degree needs to be in RE or a related discipline. If you don't have the relevant quals there's an Edge Hill number you can call, or you can email, to discuss your suitability. You may have relevant experience that will help. You can also do a short Subject Knowledg enhancement course which can make you eligible for the PGCE.

With such a useful and sought after degree, have you considered McDonalds.

I am surprised if PGCE courses are specifying this, as in practice RE in the secondary school, like PSHE, tends to be delivered by non-specialist teachers with maybe one subject specialist in the entire school. But if they do, then why not look for a way in that uses parts at least of your degree then make yourself available to teach RE. Some secondary schools have Media Studies depts so it is possible to use this area of specialist knowledge to become a teacher.

Hi Factor
Not massively im afraid. I really don't know what to do. I do want to teach and am prepared to do volunteering in a local school, but as i work full time monday-friday, im not sure if I will be able to.

What do you suggest? Thank you for replying.
