Spotlight on Academies
Much is said about academies these days, schools being free from local authority control, but there is a lot left unsaid. For instance, who controls academies and to whom are they answerable if standards are unsatisfactory. Is there a system of inspection or regulation and by whom? How can it be ascertained that people managing academies are suitably qualified and who will actually employ them? Who will manage the finances and where will the money come from?
Sorry to bombard readers with so many questions, but I do feel there should be more publicity on these points.

Although the new Government might tinker with some of the details, the old principles remain.

Many thanks Chris and Count. You have pointed to some very helpful information. Trouble is that many people don't know and remain 'in the dark' on this important subject. I hope other readers will follow the links you have given. I'm not aware of any schools where I live wishing to become academies, but perhaps there would be local concern if that were to be the case. Still not sure why an established school would wish to become an academy in any case. Is local authority control that bad?
