Are our troops sitting targets due to our ridiculous rules of engagement?
/// The number of British soldiers being shot dead in Afghanistan has spiralled as new tactics stop them from shooting at the Taliban until they have been fired at. Fourteen have been killed by enemy gunfire in Helmand Province in the past four months, compared with three in the same period in 2011. ///

You, AOG were born in Britain, so as a patriot you believe that GB is the best country in the world an is always right.
Let's imagine that you had been born in France. It's pretty much a given that you'd then believe that France was the best country in the world, and always right.
Of course, had you been born in Germany, then that would be the best country in the world, and always right.
Are we beginning to see a pattern here?
The best and always right country is whichever one YOU happened to be born in.
Patriotism is just another word for overweening vanity.

rojash,
a patriot is perhaps someone who supports the country they were born into, but it doesn't mean they support the killing of men women and children, can you say the same about the madmen killing one another in Syria.
I say get our troops out of all these places, and let them get on with it.
Then of course you will have the respective governments saying why doesn't the UN stop the killings, and asks for help from the west to do so.

That is not correct, try telling that to asylum seekers who are fleeing their country of birth, because of the way that country has been treating them.
Should not also a person who was not born in this country, but chose to come to this country, and to enjoy the benefits bestowed on them by this country, also be patriotic to the country that has 'adopted' them?

/// Let's try to actually read the article and it makes the headline grossly misleading. ///
It does not to anyone who is clever enough to see that it is a play on words, eg. "No longer a matter of shoot when you see the whites of their eyes", historically words usually associated with 'rules of engagement' when one spotted the enemy.
Now it seems that it is "don't shoot until they shoot at you"
/// Under our rules of engagement we can only really return fire and sometimes it's very frustrating." ///
And they are the words of someone that has been out there and seen for himself, not someone sitting safely at home on his computer.
So you see it is not "A cheap and misleading article" as you unintelligently put.
