Recently applied for a job and found out there was also 48 people being interviewed, should I e-mail the panel to thank them for the interview and try and standout more than others?

if you don't have the job, an arse licking email is not going to swng it for you. If there is only one job, i find it HIGHLY unlikely they are actually interviewing 48 people - they can probably do around 5 interviews a day at most (unless it's a group type thing) mening they need to set aside TEN days for interviewing! No business can afford to have a panel of people tied up for 10 days (if there are 3 on a panel, that's over a whole working month they would lose)

There is 4 jobs, 8 days of interviewing 6 people a day. It is a civil service job!

Good point though bednobs, maybe you are right. 48 interviews seems high even for 4 jobs.
absolutely incredible! (that's the civil service for you :))
As you've actually got the interview now, no point in buttering them up further at present. Be better to thank the panel themselves when you arrive, but be careful it doesn't sound sycophantic.
