Gmail Blackmail ?

I have received a message on the gmail home page to say they no longer support Internet Explorer and I MUST change my browser .
I don't want to as in the past both Chrome and Firefox gave me troubles.
However they may have improved so I have to move. What do you suggest?

Are any of you getting the same Must Change message ?

My browser is IE and yes if I log onto Gmail home page I get that message too. However, I use Thunderbird and have two email addresses including my Gmail and have no problems with that. Not yet anyway.
You could try that is you don't want to change browsers.

I just logged into gmail using IE10 with no problem. What does it mean for web page to "not support" a browser anyway? Does it just mean some features may not work?

Gmail DOES Support IE (as a quick look on their web page would confirm)

GMail say they support the latest version of all browsers and the previous one, but they wont support the one before that.

So they support IE11 and IE10 but nothing before that.

On their web site it says:

Internet Explorer 9 users

As previously announced, Internet Explorer 11 launched on October 17, 2013, and as a result, we've discontinued support for Internet Explorer 9.

I've got IE9 which is the highest you can get with Vista. The message states : "Some features may not work correctly. Upgrade to a modern browser, such as Google Chrome. Dismiss"

If that happened to me I would be so annoyed by their tactics that I would drop Gmail, rather than change browser.

I can't do that, because I don't and wouldn't use Gmail anyway.

And IE8 is the highest you can get with XP. Your beef is with Microsoft, not Google.

It's Microsoft that is refusing to update Microsoft Internet Explorer on Microsoft Vista or Microsoft XP. They are trying to "encourage" you to update your OS to Windows 7 or 8. You can do that if you wish, or you can switch to Chrome or Firefox, both of which *do* support XP and Vista.

But don't blame Google for refusing to support a decrepit browser that Microsoft themselves are no longer supporting. They provide you an alternative, free, better browser to use in its place.

When the message first came up the page was a bit compressed which made me think something was wrong but now it's back to normal and I have
deleted { Dismiss }the message and it all seems OK. I haven't seen the word DISMISS used in that way before.
I can only assume that they mean if there is trouble using IE9 they wont help. I have two other email addresses which work OK.

I would change browsers but as I said in my OP I had problems with both Chrome and Firebox a couple of years ago so I'm reluctant to change.

I would suggest that you are are going to have progressively less trouble with Chrome than with IE9, especially if you are a Gmail user.

Yes that was my reaction but I only installed Gmail about 6 months ago because Orange email ( which I've used fo 20 years ) was terribly slow.
I don't like Gmail's layout but it is the fastest of my 3 email providers and so far trouble free.

Hopkirk . Which is your favourite ? I don't know whether they scan the emails but Google certainly scans all the sites you go on.

The thing that most people have trouble getting used to is "Conversation View". I really like it but, if you don't, it can be switched off:

Cog->Settings->General->Conversation View->Off->Save Changes

frankly, I used all of them for various things. You can use Chrome to receive the emails. Or, you can install a email software to receive it:)

If you are using Windows 7 then IE11 is the browser you should be using as it is now the default choice for Windows 7 and will work with all systems.
