Covering Letter

Anyone able to give advice on what I should put in a covering letter ?
Whenever I've applied for a job in the past, its always been by means of an application form. I've now spotted something I'm interested in applying for but it asks for a CV, which I've done and I'm happy with, and a covering letter. How detailed should a letter be, and should I attempt to cover all the points in the job advert like I would with an application form, or should it be more general ?
Advice will be very much appreciated.

Don't make it go on for more than 1 side of A4 paper (including addresses etc) and make sure it is addressed to the correct person. There are lots of examples to be found on the internet if you google 'covering letter'. Good luck!
Just write saying you wish to apply for x vacancy as advertised in/at xxx. Then say something like 'my experience includes blah blah blah....' and then bullet point your best bits e.g. excellent communication skills, good organising skills etc etc and finish by saying you are available for interview on M - F between X & X da der da der da....
You can tell them why you want the job if you like or if you havent already done so in your CV, and mention any activities, eg voluntary work or awards which may be releveant to the job applied for. Overall, try to use words they have used in the ad - it makes it easier for the interviewers to tick boxes!! good luck
