Overtime - Compulsory or Not!

My husband is contracted for a 35 hour week. He is constantly being rotad for overtime which takes him to 40 plus hours a week. Does he have to work this overtime if he is rotaed for it or can he legally refuse?

It would depend on his contract I would think. Mine says that I may be asked to work extra hours as the business needs change but that it is optional as to whether I do it all the time.
In my last job, it was written in to my contract that I worked a 35 hour week but would be required to work additional hours on occasions as dictated by the needs of the business. He really needs to check his contract of employment to see what he is contractually bound to. Here is a link to the government guidelines surrounding current overtime guidelines. what does he find to do with his lay around time....hes only got 133 of them to use up

i couldnt really care less as long as hes not one of those grabbers on here copping tax credits at the same time as grizzling he may have to work a whole 40 hours
