holiday entitlement
3 Answers
I work in retail as a shop manager. In the past as long as an assistent manager or similar was covering my shop, I could book any holiday I ws entitled to, Last week I sent in a holiday form for September, and even though my shop is perfectly covered, My leave is refused, as other shops are not covered. I feel I am being peanalised for other shops being inefficient. there is nothing in my contract that covers this, It is entirely up to my area manger, who I have gone out of my way to accommodate, by helping in other shops, Anyone any help on this as I am very upset

You have had it lucky up till now, but it dosent mean they are doing anything wrong. As someone said on here the other day, there are lots of jobs where you are told when to take holiday (Teachers, factories that shut down for christmas etc)
there are a few things you can do for future
1) stop going out of your way to help them
2) look for another job
3) ask for you holiday more in advance than 2 months so you give them time to sort things out - they can't help it if more people are already off on holiday at your level - next time get your holiday in first!

OK, I take on board what previous respondants are saying, What pees me off is the moving of the goal posts every time we get a new area manager. (4 in 5 years) It's like they are trying to make their mark, new broom ETC. Until now as long as our own shop is covered, and we gave 4 weeks notice, we could have our hols. Certainly I won't be so helpful to them in future if this is how they are going to treat us, but it's a shame as I've always tried to be a model employee, but expect to be treated fairly in return. I also feel I am being penalised as one of only a few of our managers who can drive and will put myself out. If I drive for one and a half hours to a different shop they don't pay me for my travelling time, but I've always been happy to help. No longer!!
