I have just started a job where the working hours are 7 hours a day plus a 1 hour unpaid break. I was under the impression you are allowed a half hour paid break by law but no one there seems to have heard of this. Did I imagine it?

rests breaks are usually unpaid unless it says otherwise in your contract

As Redcrx indicates, there is no entitlement to a paid break. The only entitlement to any break (assuming that you're an adult, working over 6 hours in a shift) is to a single 20-minute unpaid break. That would apply even if you worked a 24 hour shift.
