Wigan and the pies from yesterday................
4 Answers
Hi everyone. Sorry about that last night. Had to dash off - RAPID! The pie in question isnt meat pie, steak pie, cheese pie etc. It's humble pie. This goes back to the general strike in 1926 when all the miners throughout Britain went on strike. They were full of determination but the strike was broken first by the Wigan miners, who returned to work and capitulated. That caused them to become known as the Humble Pie Eaters. Weaklings. The original bloke who ate all the pies was a huge man who used to keep goal for Sheffield United round about 1908. Can't remember his name but there was footage of him amongst all those films that were found in Blackburn and later appeared on BBC2, narrated by Dan Cruickshank.
