A Librarian has a formal qualification and earns about £25k, though it varies a lot. A Library Assistant earns about £14k and has a qualification in library management.
Many local authorities are heaving out their formally qualified Librarians and replacing some or all of them with Library Assistants.

Do not just think that a Librarian works for a Council Establshment that issues books to the General Public, their salary scale starts as buildersmate states, and increases with responsibility and duties.
Many large organisations, such as the Media, eg BBC, other TV stations and Newspapers employ Librarians to either store or retreive stories from the past to back up current reports. Their salaries are potentially much higher, but as buildersmate state, requires formal qualifications! There are Universities which run degree courses in Library Studies.
