The Geordie accent..?

My mother was a geordie. Lovely accent. Trouble is my family (midlanders) never could understand my cousin.

I can understand most accents in the UK when they are talking to me, but as soon as they start talking to another "local" it becomes much harder.

I don`t think the Geordie accent is looked down upon at all. I don`t think many UK accents are looked down upon although (ignorant) people take the p*ss out of Brummie, Norfolk and West Country accents but that`s just their problem.

I find it very attractive, we loved going to see my mother's family in Murton when we were kids. And my mum never really lost her accent even though she lived in Yorkshire for around 70 years

Now I love the Brummie and Leicester accents - so warm and friendly. Spent my earliest holidays there for many a year, never had a problem in understanding them.
