Why was this allowed to happen?

I was signed into amazon today and had added something to my basket in case I wanted to come back to it and order later. I NEVER clicked to order or confirmed payment or anything. In fact I found what I wanted elsewhere so turned the computer off. Check my emails later and find the order has been placed and shipped, within a few hours! Oh and they have helpfully charged a card I do not use and this payment was not authorised at all. I have sent emails and am now on hold to the credit card company but I am struggling to understand how they can do this without my confirmation?

I can obviously refuse the item which I plan to do but the seller says I will have to pay £7.50 fo return postage. They need to refund me for the product so I guess I am stuck now financially. They will just deduct the postage anyway. Does anyone have any idea how I can handle this now? How is it fair that I am forced to pay £7.50 postage for something I never even bloody ordered!
