We're in ductwork so the H&S test you do will be different but when we took on a new lad a couple of years ago he passed the test (which was easy I'm told) and then we got him a 'Mates' card. He's never been refused from working on any site because he is just a mate. Most sites just want you to have a card, they don't care which one.
It's more difficult if you want a higher card. With the 'Supervisor' cards we had all the operatives had to be assessed on site by someone from CSCS as they had all learnt on the job with no formal quals.

If so have a look at this website where all the different cards are listed with a description of each. If you click on "Apply" there's a phone number to call. When you call they will ask you all about your skills and experience and help you to determind your level. They will also help you to apply and direct you to your local test centre.
It all sounds complicated but its not too bad once you get to speak to someone. Beleive me there are a whole variety of people getting them from the newly qualified to the old timers with no qulifications. You'll be fine once you speak to the CSCS people.
(I'd aim for gold if I were you - once done they'll be no looking back)
If not self employed ask your boss to do it all!
