You should choose your work experience based on what you might want to do as a career. I wanted to be a journalist and got sent to a magazine. It was a great experience although it made me realise that magazines weren't for me! (I got to do to a fashion show though!)
i'd suggest keeping away from topshop and places like that - just apply for a job there later. i'm writing a new CV up at the moment and i can't tell you how glad i am that i've done work experience in various different companies that people will have heard of. what sort of thing would you like to do later in life? what interests you? what subjects do you do at school, and which do you intend to continue? i strongly recommend looking for something that is similar to what you see yourself doing once you're out of the education system.
large businesses are more likely to give you work experience because they are better equipped for it, and will generally have lots of things to keep you busy. plus, if they like you then they might offer you the option of working for them during school holidays.
finally, ask your school as to what they recommend. best of luck whatever you end up doing!
