If you want to work at a particular prison you can just write to or phone them. My sister did this. If you live in London, Holloway are very short of staff.

The initial training course is 3 months long and is residential during the week, but you get travel warrants to go home at weekends. They try and train you somewhere as near to home as possible.

You must attain a certain level of fitness to be accepted, and once you have been accepted you need to maintain or exceed that level of fitness at yearly tests. (This doesn't apply to officers who trained before they brought in the ruling, only newly qualified ones who entered the service after this was brought in.).  Most prisons have a staff gym and membership is free, so they do help you to keep fit.
