Am an ex NHS manager. My question would be (and you dont have to answer me on here) what kind of sickness would make you unable to go to work yet able to fly to the USA? There might be a sensible answer to this and if there is, then go to your HR department and raise it. If there isn't a sensible answer, then no, you can't switch from leave to sick leave and back again.

A lot will depend on your Employers, I had a situation where a member of staff was recuperating after hospital treatment, received permission to go on holiday but was not allowed to claim the holiday leave back although officially had a certificate for the period. This was a large International Company.
Boxtops has just checked her latest trusts sick/annual leave policy, which states that "employees wishing to take accrued annual leave whilst on long term sick leave should contact their line manager". I'm not sure if the same occurs in your particular trust, but I'd check with your manager re your trusts position on this.
thank you all for that, yes i have read the policy and it is just much the same ie contacting my manager and then they discuss with occ health, hi woofgang,i really respect your comments as they are truthful and informative, i have shoulder/neck/arm pain and physio suspect a pinched nerve coming from a bulging disc, i have been to occ health and they say im unfit for work at this time and have referred me to a consultant in 4/6 weeks and and my return to work would be best determined after my mri scan, and i absolutly agree with you what would make one able to take a holiday but not able for work, the thing is that i feel i really am improving and have been for a number of weeks, its the nature of my job and the volume of moving and handeling where i work that is keeping me from returning at present, and i do love my job i dont want to rattle on but im going through the correct proceedures to get back to work asap and had i not been asked to have such an important role in the christening (godmother) i would cancel the trip,im kinda at a loss as what i should do . do i go back to work anyway against occ health/docs advice? or should i cancel my christening and godmother role?... hank you all PS i dont intend to claim back any A/L when i do return to work x
