Morning all.
I have recently registered as self employed [1/5/12] and then this morning get a letter from the tax office telling me I need to fill in a self assessment form! I personally don't see a lot of point in that after just two weeks lol

Are they just pre-warning me that this is a thing I will have to do in the future? [end of tax year] The letter states that the forms are to follow.

I do/will have an accountant but have yet to meet him yet as I am considered non-urgent.

They were probably ust informing you that an SA is necessary from now on. Come next April you will need to fill in the form for this tax year (6/4/12 - 5/4/13). Then as Canary says you get about 9 months in which to file it, having said that we have found that it is better to file as soon as possible after 6 April - it gets it out of the way

As you only registered as self employed in this tac year you shouldn't need to fill in a self assessment form until next April, but it is worth taking the time now to register with HMRC to submit the form online
You don't need an accountant to fill out SE...

Phone the tax office, go to the tax office....very very helpful people

As far as I know, I have done all the right things registering. I was just little shocked to be asked to fill in a SA so soon.

@ ummmm, I do now that but am so nervous of messing up, the guy was recommend by my ex and everything is free ....unless I ask him to do the SA when it's due.

I have to fill in a SA form every year - the letter advising me of the requirement always arrives within a few days of the new tax year starting (6th April) but the form deadline is 31st January (if you do it online, 31st Dec if you use the paper version I believe)

Lisa, honestly. If you're worried the tax office will fill it out for you.

Like the others said...it's probably for next year.
