Taking Business Laptop Home
24 Answers
Hello,
My Employer has just told all my team members that henceforth we will be required to take our Laptops home every night as part of the Business Continuity Plan. The plan being if the office burns down we can work from home.
There has been no provision for any internet connection from our homes (it is expected that they can use our personal broadband for free) and there has been no mention of any payment for our inclusion in this.
I don't really want to be taking my laptop home every night. I am not even allowed to leave it in the car whilst I pop to the shop on my way home.
What is the AB community's thoughts on this.
Thanks
Andrew

The idea is that if the office is closed down for any reason (eg a flood) then you will be able to do some work from home using the laptop which presumably has access to some of your office systems. It's not (officially) a way of getting you to do unpaid work from home at evenings/weekends).
The only thing to make sure of is that you are not expected to insure it as the company must cover any loss, but I'm sure a major company would be reasonable about this as part of the deal.
I can understand why they don't want you to leave it in the car though, especially if customer/client data is on there.
If you don't have broadband or would need a higher level you'll have to ask them to provide it
