Setting Up A Blog - Info Needed

Hello everyone - I'd like to set up a Blog. I'm getting all sorts of info from different sources, usually people wanting to sell a service.

I'd like to know which Blog hosts you could recommend - Blogger, Word Press etc. I've also been told that if you sell ad space on your Blog using some hosts, you don't really profit as they take most of the revenue. Obviously it's going to take a while to build up traffic before I could offer advertising if at all, but I like to know these things in advance.

I've also been told it's best to use your own domain name. Frankly I'm confused by the whole thing. I've watched a few tutorials, but most have something to push. I wondered if anyone could be me some unbiased advice. Thank you.
