I'm intrigued... any teachers on here willing to tell a very disgruntled teenager how and why they became a teacher knowing that those they work with hate them? Sorry, I am obviously over-reacting and such, but an explanation would be nice.

Many teachers have a genuine passion for working with teenagers and want to do their best to give these kids the best possible change in life.  I think teachers WANT to try to inspire their pupils.

Not all teenagers hate their teachers by the way.  I went to a school where hardly any of the teachers were hated.  Most were very well respected and many were "loved" by the kids (in the non-sick way!!!).

The irony with teeangers who hate school is that they often want to leave and get a job.  They object to school because:

  • Set hours.
  • Uniform.
  • Someone tells you what to do.
  • It can be pretty boring.

The thing about work though, is:

  • Set hours.
  • Uniform (a suit is still basically a uniform).
  • Your boss tells you what to do.
  • It's often pretty boring.

Sorry - I digress.

I have a huge amount of respect for people who choose to work with teenagers.  I suppose the feeling of having helped just one kid, must make taking a lot of abuse worth it.

I wouldnt want to be a teacher, but i have to say that all the holidays off sounds a good reason to put up with it!!
I think the holidays are when the teachers finally have time to have that nervous breakdown that the kids have been pushing them to all year!  At least that's kinda how my parents spent the holidays.  Oh - and planning next year's lessons!

I guess. I know they are trying to help me and all, and generally I get on very well with my teachers, but sometimes I just feel like saying "Argh, it will be your fault if I end up a twitchy spinster muttering Shakespeare unding my breath to myself because I had no social life while young due the fact that was sat at home, kidding myself that I care about the deep underlying social issues of Romeo and effing Juliet". But I know it's for own good really... I think I just needed a rant.

Bill Gates left Harvard University after a year because he thought their was nothing useful they could teach him.

In 2004, former prison inmate Roman Abramovich was earning 1.3 million per day, or about 900 per minute.

Bill Gates' take home was roughly triple that.

In all honesty I think alot of teachers (im not saying all of them) end up in teaching because they get a degree and dont know what to do next. It is after all a job at the end of the day and there are not that many options available to graduates despite what some people might think. I have a couple of teacher friends who would rather be doing something else.
