Can a job title be considered as a misrepresentation of a job? For example if you applied, were interviewed for and hired as a chef but were actually performing duties of a kitchen porter whilst being called a chef, would that be a misrepresentation?

I think job titles are less important than the actual job description of the role you applied for. and what duties were outlined in the interview/advert. Are you being paid as a chef?

It might depend exactly what the difference is. You need certain qualifications to be able to call yourself a Chef, but not necessarily to perform kitchen duties.

If you have been there less than a year (or is it 2 years now) they can dismiss you for almost any reason, so they may tell you to 'like it or lump it'. Are you being paid at the agreed rate for a chef?

Thanks for your answers - the chef thing was just an example (probably a bad one actually!!).I work as a business manager, recently started a new position which was advertised with all of the responsibilities of that position but in reality am not managing anything and am expected to work as a field based sales rep. There is a certain overlap of responsibilities with business manager / sales rep but based on the expectations of me now I would consider this as a misrepresentation

I think it will depend on the job description. Reread it and see how close your job is to what they described.

I would think that they are looking to see how you perform 'in the field' before handing you more responsibility, just go with it for a few months and see how it goes.

Could there be some kind of meaning that if you are a rep in the field you are, to an extent, managing your own little business?

I remember it being said in recruitment that running your patch was like running your own business although only being a normal employee and not a Manager as such.
