He gets 36k p.a. for being deputy speaker on top of his 66k p.a. salary for being an MP and as at the moment he has only resigned from deputy speaker post the pay off only relates to that part of his salary.

Well, the severence scheme is the rule so it must be obeyed. It is not a good rule. MPs usually resign because they are forced to, whether the result of some impropreity or because they are useless. Why they should then be still paid after they lose their pist is a mystery.

As Old Geezer points out, they write their own rules so don't be surprised if they are overly generous to themselves.

Three Deputy Speakers are elected by the House of Commons. The principal Deputy Speaker is the Chairman of Ways and Means.

The other two Deputy Speakers are Deputy Chairmen of Ways and Means and are known respectively as First and Second Deputy Chairman of Ways and Means.

Once elected, the Chairman of Ways and Means and the two Deputy Chairmen all withdraw from an active political role.

I would like to see more detail, and additional confirmation that ministers and officials get a severance payment such as this in all circumstances.

Assuming it is true though, no I do not think they should receive such a payment - he will still be receiving his MPs salary, so why should he need a settlement like this?

I've just noticed - so not only do they do naff all for the 36k , but they also do naff all for the 66k , MP's salary .
