Eldest granddaughter works it the care sector, she has been told by her boss she must work on Christmas day.

She lives about 12 miles from the job and normally gets the bus as she does not drive, but none are running on that day as you would expect.

She has told him she cannot get there and he has told her that's not his problem if she doesn't make it in she will be in trouble.

How does she stand on this? Must she work? Does he expect her to walk 12 miles in & 12 miles back?

She's happy to work but is getting upset about this.

She loves the job so will probably get a cab & bear the cost herself, its only one day, just seems a bit mean that she has to work on that day and bear the costs involved.
Tambo, I think it's the fact that it's going to be very difficult to get to work and back.
Tambo- millie hasn't said the family are upset over the granddaughter working, neither has she said she herself doesn't want to work it, more she's worried about how she's going to get there.
Is it just me? but if I was a boss in a care sector, I'd want those people to be cared for and would make sure staff were able to get to work, even if it meant collecting them myself and leaving them home again. As the boss he is responsible to ensure the carers are there
could she cycle?
I hope she's on double time to help with the cost of a taxi, they can be expensive on Christmas day.

She should book one now and ask for a price beforehand.
btw psybo, i disagree that its his job to see the workers get to work - it absolutely isn't his job.
"...How does she stand on this? Must she work? Does he expect her to walk 12 miles in & 12 miles back? ...."

That isnt sympathtic to the job requirement.
Missed the last line off.....

Tony/2sp - she didn't mention double time, I will have to ask her, yes you are right, she had better book now or they might be booked up or those that are not will be charging a premium.
Bednobs, if she can't, for any reason, make it into work, is it not his job to ensure those people have proper care?
Well I hope that like our town, cabs gave up charging more as competition increased, they are busier than ever because of it.

Good luck to her Millie.
I hope she sorts something out and you all have a good Christmas, Millie.
Yes, she should get a cab booked asap, silliemillie.
our local taxis have cheaper rates for medical staff
I'm wondering if she is getting double pay on xmas day. Taxis can up prices.
Thing is - if a rota system and its her day to work its tricky for management unless someone is prepared to swap with her, even then you have to give alot of notice.

If she can do a deal with another member of staff - even if they are going out of their way abit to pick her up - I'd do that and it will be far cheaper than a taxi but a local firm might welcome the work and not charge much. Check out it might not be that bad. Put a notice up & email those working on xmas day and see what happens - staff love helping out in circs like this. If all fails book a taxi well in advance - you can always cancel if you get a lift..

Thank you all for your input, we will sort something out, if its too expensive or booked up I will drive her myself.
sillie - I forgot to mention - do they have a guestroom she could ask sleep there the night before if an early start (if she wanted to). (Doubt the manager would argue)
if u give a throwaway email now I'll pay the fare
bet you a £1 her manager is not working that day, looks like a taxi it is!
