The veyron did 252 5 years ago and several cars have topped that. That last few MPH is going to be exponentially difficult. How far are we from the 300mph car?

Malcolm Campbell beat that in 1932 in a wheel driven car ( 254 mph). The question is, why has it taken 80 years for car manufacturers to catch up?
Campbell also did >300 mph in 1937.

Probably because they appreciate that there is not a mass market for cars that can travel almost four times the legal speed limit.
