Start out as a third officer (after training) and work your way up to get your Master's Certificate:

cadet (apprentice) first then much hard work! My late DH was a Master Mariner and I have driven a supertanker (very deep sea, nothing to hit) back in the 70's and 80's it was quite the done thing for wives travelling with their husbands to stand watch with them and do enough hours steering to get a steering ticket....still got mine somewhere.
