No, you don't need any documents if you tax your car at a Post Office, and you have the reminder from DVLA. It SAYS you do, but we retaxed ours last week, and the lady just wanted the payment. All the other details (insurance and MOT)are on the database, so if you aren't listed as having hem, then no disc will be issued. It's all to do with fraud prevention. In October...

I do it all online now- it's very straghtforward and I don't need to send any evidence off
...so do I, and don't need to pay either...since car is exempt.
It usually tells you on the reminder what you need to take but as FF says do it online & no need to produce anything. Saves looking for documents IMO.
A friend woke his entire household searching for his MOT certificate and insurance details at early o'clock yesterday morning. He was mightily miffed when the post office clerk wasn't interested in his paperwork.........

In October 2014, you won't need a tax disc at all as they are being phased out. You will pay to be licensed though.
Whenever I get mine done at the post office, which isn't often, they have always looked at my insurance and MOT.
You just need your form, they scan a barcode and that's all they need.
@Prudie...it's only recently that they haven't needed any paperwork....
Yes, you need your insurance certificate and mot certificate to prove the car is legal. If its a new car this should be on the system when you go to the PO and shoudn't ask for it.
That makes sense, it's probably a year or two and my PO is very backward anyway :-)
Soph 01......As someone else has pointed out, it's ALL electronic now. They scan the barcode on your renewal form, take your payment, and that's it. No need for any documents any more.

If you aren't insured, or don't have an MOT ( if needed), then the
Post Office will not issue a disc.

The police now have systems linked to national ANPR cameras, and can tell immediately if a vehicle has no tax,
insurance or MOT.

Also, from October, when selling a vehicle, the seller will have to return any disc still held for a refund. It will be illegal to sell it with the car. The new owner has to apply for tax in their own name. Fraud prevention again.

Good news, and will help to get the uninsured, untaxed and unlicenced scroats off the road.
