I've just seen an ad on the telly for a part-work magazine, enabling you to build a model of the U-96 U-boat, with the first issue on sale for just 50p. I've absolutely no interest in building such a model (and I'm surprised that the publishers obviously think that there are enough people who actually will be) but, just out of curiosity, I've looked at the website to see the real cost of the model.

In really big print you see "Issue 1 Only 50p".

In smaller print there's "Usual price £5.99"

In really small print it says "Model complete in 150 issues".

Any takers?

not me. I remember Mic buying a car maintenance mag years ago that went on for months. He chucked the towel in after about 3.
They're also advertising a similar kit for a steam train. I suppose they might help to pass the long Winter nights. Anybody spending £1800 on the pair probably couldn't afford to do anything but sit in and build them.

Thanks, Jeza.

I often wonder what how many people actually stick with these things all of the way through. Knowing my luck, if I was mad enough to subscribe, the publisher would go bust after 149 issues ;-)
Ja, ich möchte mein Geld auf einem Nazi-Kriegswerkzeugverschwenden
Must be some size to take 150 issues, Chris.....could I use it for my next holiday?...x
Yes, you often see a host of these publications early in the New Year...
The word "anorak" comes to mind but I have no right to talk as when I was a kid I used to buy the Meccano magazine.
Were the crew of Das Boot not 'good Germans'?
You can always tell it's September-ish when these things come out. After a few weeks, do they actually go on producing the magazines, I don' recall seeing them after about December.
Chris, you didn't HAVE to go onto the website to get that info...it was all on screen during the ad...according to my OH ( or Hawkeyes)
What about Airfix? I ended up fast glued together while the little plane fell apart.

If I'd got that sort of money to throw away, Sandy, I'd rather invest it in one of the projects to build real (brand new) steam engines. There are currently over 20 in the UK.
Years ago, I knew someone who subscribed to 'murder casebook'. First few were the main onrs, Sutcliffe, Neilson, etc before it descended into obscure US murderers. Over 100 issues later it just about killed the subscriber!!

Well done for typing that with one arm raided ;-)

I thought that you had an aversion to water (or to any other liquid that doesn't contain alcohol).

Gingejbee:
I'm watching telly using a 4" screen next to my computer. I can't read the small print!

Obiter:
I used to get my Dad to make my Airfix kits for me ;-)

Thanks as well, Aggie, Zebo and anyone else I've missed out.
