I currently work full time as a healthcare assistant in my local hospital. At the same time I am undertaking a full time access to Higher education course. Prior to beginning the course, I checked with my manager that I would be able to book two evenings off per week to attend. She said I should go for it, that I'd make a great nurse and yes I could book the days I required. However, having booked required days off, I have subsequently been put on shift for most of them, meaning I then have to ask colleagues to swap shifts with me. I am getting increasingly frustrated, my manager says she doesn't have any input into the rota as it is done electronically. I don't really want to go over my managers head, but we have had the same conversation every month for the last 3. Any advice would be much appreciated.

well if your manager has no input into the off duty, you seem to be wasting your time talking to her, and she was exceeding her authority by saying it was ok.
Have you always managed to swap shifts or has it been difficult?
Sounds like the NHS to me

and yes I would agree with her view that the course is worth going for

It is commonplace for your line manager to say yes I am in charge and then when it comes down to it,for them to say oops I am not in charge for that !
[ and then you find they are but they cant be a=sed to do anything about it ]

So it looks as tho you are gonna have to swap
at least you have a good excuse

I think I did Fri nights 1985-1995 and managed to swap five times.
at least it made me very willing to swap later on as it is just hell if people say no [ which I knew from experience ]

good luck with the course

I do manage to swap shifts usually vendors, I'm just conscious of people becoming fed up with me asking every month. Thank you for your response Peter Pedant, yes it does seem to be typical of the ward I work on. I'm sure staff on other wards don't have the same problems. Hey ho, it's only until June 2015 when I will hopefully pass my exams and start my degree! Thank you :-)
