I don't know, but perhaps it's like being a model, you have to get spotted at a competition!  I'm sure it won't hurt to enter and win a lot of gaming competitions.  Then perhaps send off your CV and your "gaming CV" to various companies and ask them what you just asked us.

Sorry that it's not a direct answer.  Hope you get the job you want though! :-)

Hi there

You will more than likely want to start off with a degree in computing and learn/improve your software programming skills. The University of Central Lancashire does a degree in games developing http://www.uclan.ac.uk/courses/ug/bsc_cgd.htm and there is a website that contains a bit more information about the games development industry in general here http://www2.ravensoft.com/getajob.htm

a lot of companies are in america and other countries, so u may be facing a move abroad for a job, also u have to look at it logically. Game developers dont want someone that knows how to play a game etc, they need people to make them, that includes artists trained and experienced in computer art and 3d software, computer script writers, programmers etc, best bet is to get the skills needed and then they will want u. get a degree in a computing field, like peahead said, and work hard at trying to develop your own games that u can use as a portfolio to any potential developers. It takes a lot of hard work and time but u can get there.

Sorry guys, looks like I got it wrong.  I thought rudepuppy wanted to be one of the guys who tries out a game and says how to improve it.  I guess that's a games tester.  Still, knowing the market won't hurt.

Lots of advice on this over at http://www.gamedev.net

It would seem that having your own portfolio is the best way to go.. and know your C++!! Be comfortable with pointers and structures etc. Not much else will hack the world of gaming.

Good luck... I'm still thinking about trying to get into it myself (have been for the last 10 years!).
