Yes, I think it is necessary- I have heard of it happening before
It may well be necessary for Ladbroke's to obtain such information in order to comply with anti-money laundering legislation. If you doubt the genuineness of an email (apparently) from Ladbroke's phone 0800 731 6191 to check whether it's genuine or not.
And what about those of us who have no passport?

I'd not be tempted to use the service but thanks for the warning anyway.

p.s. If it's a prize, how can potential money laundering even be an issue?

Could this be a spoofed email, phishing for valid passport numbers?

Why would they want your passport details? I doubt Ladbrokes have the facility or permission to check your passport details against the Government`s database.
@chris r

Ask yourself why they request bank details AND home address rather than complying with your request to pay via PayPal.

That's the whole point of using PayPal.
Check your email viewer menu options and see if you can find one called "view header information".
See if it will let you copy the header and paste it here.
I have a ladbrokes account and any winnings are left on the account. When I want to withdraw them I always choose the debit card option. I don't remember being aksed for ID when I set the facility up, but have definitely not been asked for ID with either a win or a withdrawal. In fact I have neve had an eamil about teh winnings, onky emails I receive are promotional ones.

is the money showing as a credit on your Ladbrokes account?

Some discussion here about the ID checks made before withdrawals can be made
The advice about being cautious is of course good, but if the email was clearly addressed to you by name and was in response to your withdrawal request then I think the request is likely to be genuine. But you can contact Ladbrokes via your online account secure message to check. I am sure I had to do the same to withdraw
Major omission on my part

If you were to copy the email header for AB techies to analyze, remember to 'munge' (redact/scramble/anonymise) -your- email address as this is a public forum.

email headers reveal a list of servers the message has passed through. These can be spoofed, true, but other Ladbrokes users should be able to recognise any wrong-sounding servers in the transmission route.

If in doubt about any suspect email, visit the main company website (https:// and no typing errors and not using a link planted in an email) and ring the contact number shown to make enquiries.

Phishing emails depend on an authentic-looking phoney website, featuring a phone number that is capable of being mistaken for the real thing by the absent-minded.

The fact that they prey on the trusting and those with fading faculties is why I hate them so much.

When I set up my totepool account I had to provide my passport and I sent it as a scanned copy. My winnings get paid into my current account which is attached to the account.
It's legit - this is on their website:
In certain circumstances we may ask you to complete our verification procedure before any payment is made to you. In such instances we will require the following:

Card - A copy of both sides of the card registered to your account, clearly showing your signature.
Identity - A copy of your passport or driving license.
Address - A copy of Bank statement, Utility bill or official document showing address.

Despite all the above, I'd be extremely cautious. The information asked for seems way over the top for such a small payout. How is anyone going to be involved in money laundering with £400? Definitely find something you are absolutely certain is a genuine Ladbroke's phone number & quiz them about the reasons they want this before you comply.
Ask them to send you a cheque.
