Once he gets going, word-of-mouth is always the best recomendation, Make sure he always leaves two or three business cards with every customer - one for a return visit, a couple more for the customer to pass on to friends.
Tell everyone you know to pass the word around, and hopefully it will all take off. The secret is - be reliable, be professional, be nice - in that order.
door to door leaflets can be printed off cheaply, just make sure u have a good advert with maybe an offer that makes it seem cheaper than it is, 3 carpets for the price of 2 sort of thing, and once the work starts to come in then if u do a fantastic job the word of mouth will do its on work for u.
My biggest advice is that u have to remember that most people that want them cleaned are either those with major accidents that need sorting out, and those that are too lazy to bother to do it themselves. Make sure u have some offer or price range that is extremely enticing to the lazy sorts as they will find it far easier to fork out a small sum to save them time than do it themselves. And make sure u advertise to the middle calls sort of people and those likely to have little time to clean carpets. no offence to council estates but a lot of the houses wont have the disposible income to pay for them to be cleaned. some might not even think they need to be ever cleaned lol. So aim for those with the money and the lack of time to do it themselves, hope thats a few ideas for u to think on,
Good luck with it xxx
Could you take a stall at a car boot sale with pieces of carpet "before" and "after" and maybe some photos, basically just a way of giving out cards.
It would mean customers could put a face to a name, always a good idea. Maybe run a competition, eg all October customers go into a draw and one gets their costs refunded?
