My husband and I are about to apply for a mortgage, does this mean he will be able to see my credit history? In the past (the last time was a month ago) I have occassionally (about 6 times in 2 1/2 years) taken out payday loans, only for small amounts (about £40) for a couple of days and paid back in full on time everytime. However, he does not know this and would strongly dissaprove if he found out. I know I should be honest but what I'm actually asking is... Will he find out about these when applying for a mortgage together and will it effect our chances of getting a mortgage?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
It wont affect your chances of getting a mortgage as you paid them on time, however through experience, yes both parties -on obtaining your credit check report-will be able to see everything that each other have had loan wise. My husband and i could see everything way back to approx fifteen years previous. Everything was listed down very clearly.
If you have had to take out payday loans to carry you over then the mortgage company may think that you can't manage on your income and worry about lending you the money.
No-one should see your Credit Report at the first stage and it will stay that way if the request is immediately approved.
Your application will be loaded onto the computer and this will assess you along with your need to meet salary multiples and your income/outgoing ratio being in the guidelines. If a straight accept that is the end of it. If it is a straight reject or even a referral due to Credit register info then a full report will be pulled up by the Lender, at that point they will use the information to make their final decision. Neither of you should be allowed to see it as the information belongs to them. You should then be given the forms required for you to apply for your Credit File, it is at this point when you each have your own information that your husband will want to see what is on yours especially if his is clear.
Not I am using the word should as I cannot guarantee the rules are obeyed by all institutions. I can't imagine they will have changed since I was signing off Mortgages.
