I am not sure ANYBODY works in coal mines in the UK any more.
Women could (and did) work in mines until the passing of the Mines Act in 1842.

When the Sex Discrimination Act was passed in 1975 there was an exemption (Section 21) relating to the employment of women in mines.

The Section 21 exemption was, however, removed in part by the Employment Act 1989 and completely by the Coal Industry Act 1992.

So, yes, women can work in mines.
