I have just received a copy of an advert for a temp job in a school.. The advert says "You will be Teaching Literacy and Numerousy..." It doesn't say whether I'd be teaching these to the pupils or to the Head/HR department...

I now help out (voluntarily) at an Academy and we get kids coming in with reading ages of 8 (children are 11) and appalling spelling - they can't cope with the work at Secondary level. Seriously, could a hint be dropped to someone?
Not read all the posts, but teaching literacy and numeracy is a dedicated skill and not to be taken lightly. I used to assist teaching literacy at college as a volunteer in the eighties. When I applied as a job club leader, I got the job because I was also expected to teach literacy - not that I knew that then.
It was only after three months that I was hauled before the big boss because I hadn't taught any literacy and numeracy skills as such, and I had to point out to them that three hours a day was no substitute for years of all day schooling that had failed. I still got the push..

Might we not agree (at one point in history) on the meaning and spelling of words?
"Unnethe myghte they the statut holde
In which that they were bounden unto me.
Ye woot wel what I meene of this, pardee!
As help me God, I laughe whan I thynke
How pitously a-nyght I made hem swynke! "
What thynke you, Buenchico?
If Ye woot wel what I meene.

Please, no, V_E!
We studied Chaucer in the original English at school and I hated every minute of it!
The Lyf so short, the craft so long to Lerne,
Th’assay so hard, so sharp the conquerynge,
The dredful joye, alwey that slit so yerne,
Al this mene I by love, that my felynge
Astonyeth with his wonderful werkynge
So sore iwis, that whan I on him thinke,
Nat wot I wel wher that I flete or synke
