Literacy And Numerousy.

I have just received a copy of an advert for a temp job in a school.. The advert says "You will be Teaching Literacy and Numerousy..." It doesn't say whether I'd be teaching these to the pupils or to the Head/HR department...

roopower - you are joking, aren't you? If not, that teacher needs some education. I now help out (voluntarily) at an Academy and we get kids coming in with reading ages of 8 (children are 11) and appalling spelling - they can't cope with the work at Secondary level. Seriously, could a hint be dropped to someone?

I happened to be passing through the classroom of a science teacher (on my way to deal with a first aid problem) when I heard her referring to mu-grams. She'd obviously skipped most of her lectures at uni, so she'd only ever seen μg written down, and had no idea how to say it!

Not read all the posts, but teaching literacy and numeracy is a dedicated skill and not to be taken lightly. I used to assist teaching literacy at college as a volunteer in the eighties. When I applied as a job club leader, I got the job because I was also expected to teach literacy - not that I knew that then.
It was only after three months that I was hauled before the big boss because I hadn't taught any literacy and numeracy skills as such, and I had to point out to them that three hours a day was no substitute for years of all day schooling that had failed. I still got the push..

zebo. hampster instead of hamster is in one of the dictionaries (can't remember which), as I found when doing a newspaper crossword years ago.

just checked, it's Chambers (or possibly Champsters). "Hamster or hampster".

^^^ I've just logged into the OED website. 'Hamster', 'hampster' and even 'hamester' are all acceptable.

^^^ The OED usually quotes recognised sources, Mikey. The Spectator of 23 November 1895 is cited for the first-known use of 'hampster', so it's hardly new. (Neither is 'hamester', which can be traced back to 1607).
