we have always had taboo words ( non pc language in todays world), taboo actions and taboo meats
and they change
and differ according to culture
knee-jare was OK in the twenties - and not now
sanitary was taboo in the 89s - 1890s that is! - and now does NOT mean towel as first meaning
I mentioned that I had picked up Paardevleis in a supermarket in Holland and when I found what it was thought - oh my god I have TOUCHED horse meat aaargh ! and a Hindu ( cows yeah?) said she hadnt realised that horse meat was a taboo food for anglo-saxons. (or dog meat or cat meat or rat meat )
as for a taboo action - sax in public springs to mind
but clouting someone else's kid was OK in the fifties
but clouting anything now is frowned upon....
taboos were always there
