I would say it is important even if not strictly necessary. Terminal diagnosis have been wrong before now. Is there any time span given, is it months or years?
There may be a new treatment or transplant that does work , advances in cancer treatment are rapid and are being made all the time.

She doesn't have to study but schools are hugely accommodating in these situations. If she wants to cherry pick the best bit of school they will make it happen, if she wants to study at home this can be arranged (I gave home lessons to a terminally ill student because he wanted to study). I'd be amazed if the school didn't want/couldn't assist.
