School Work Experience

My boss has her daughter and other school pupils coming to do work experience , I assume this will be after exams , any idea what sort of dates this will be as I will make sure I have annual leave booked !

It's usually Year 10s so may not be dependent on exam times. Ask?

Work experience has happened for Year 10's around here. They were on W.E last week.

They leave after the exams.

I organise this for my work place and most schools have their week or 2 weeks planned months in advance (if it's the official Year 10 placements) and can be any time although usually in Spring or Summer terms. Yes ask.

Each school has a usually different set time planned in - they are not all out at the same time or the local businesses couldn't cope.

As has been said, schools try to ensure that they choose different work experience dates to other schools in the area, so that there's a better chance of finding placements for their students. However many schools have their Year 10 exams very close to the end of the year, so work experience tends to before then. (In practice the period when Year 11 students are taking their GCSEs is a popular time for work experience, simply because those teachers who no longer have to teach Year 11 have got more time to go and visit their Year 10 students in their placements).

The only way to be sure of the dates (other than asking your boss) is to look on the website of the relevant school(s).

I've just checked on a few (fairly random) schools.

The school I used to teach at (many moons ago, in Sheffield) starts work experience on 2nd July, for a fortnight.

The school that's now local to me start their work experience on 9th July, for a week.

Another nearby school start their work experience on 16th July, for a week.

The school I attended myself (in the days when we had pet dinosaurs) also start their work experience on 16th July, for a week.

A completely random school in Birmingham also has work experience, for one week, from 16th July.

So it looks like July is now the favoured month in many areas.

The 2 weeks of 9th and 16th july are when we have the most applicants for work exp at our place, although all other weeks are booked too eventually. Guess it can vary.

I doubt very much that she is being sent there to spy on you and report back. She is probably equally worried you'll report back on her to her mum (your boss). But if the department is well run she will gain a good impression and that can't be a bad thing can it?
