Should A Man Always Wear A Suit, Shirt And Tie For A Job Interview?

Or does it depend on the role? For example is it only expected if say going for an office based job and not a manual job in a factory? Advice please.

It depends on the role, definitely. Smart, but appropriate, I would say. I have turned up to every job interview I have had (and never not been offered it) wearing jeans or jodhpurs. If I had worn a suit, it would look like I had no idea what the job was...

Whenever I went for an interview, I always polished my shoes first and wore a suit, shirt and tie. I just thought it would show that I cared, if nothing else.

Not appropriate for a manual job in a factory. For that interview I would suggest a smart dark polo shirt and combats, or other plain dark trousers and jumper. Avoid pale blue jeans, soft trousers and hoodies.

I turned up for an interview for a welding job in a factory making steel-frame furniture, dressed casually but smart. I was asked to take a welding test which consisted of welding a stand chair together. Needless to say, i completely ruined my shirt with the unavoidable coolant on the steel.
If it is a manual job, ask the firm if you will be required to undergo a manual test and what the appropriate clothing would be for such a test.

I would always advocate a suit,shirt and tie but then I'm old school. Highly polished shoes as well. My old man always told me a man was judged by the state of his shoes. He also told me to thank the interviewing panel for their time at the conclusion of the interview. Always did me well.

a manual job in a factory?

Depends on where and who is interviewing you, a small place and it's the foreman interviewing you then dress casual, a large company and it's human resources ( personnel officer / manager ) then dress a bit more upmarket.
