Or does it depend on the role? For example is it only expected if say going for an office based job and not a manual job in a factory? Advice please.

I was asked to take a welding test which consisted of welding a stand chair together. Needless to say, i completely ruined my shirt with the unavoidable coolant on the steel.
If it is a manual job, ask the firm if you will be required to undergo a manual test and what the appropriate clothing would be for such a test.
