wanna be a doctor get a phD. Profs get there by applying after releasing loads of papers/research and being a credit to their profession. not a list but a start. MSc you do a masters in science etc. It's fairly self explanatory i think. sorry just bored more than anything. sorry if this answer isn't what you wanted

it actually kind of is. i thought that a phd would make you a doctor. but what about my gp? im sure he doesnt have a phd and he is a doctor.
and what about us Baronesses?
A professorship is usually award by a university, a Phd allows you to call yourself a doctor, although GP's take the title doctor as an honourary thing, and if they become consultants they revert to being Mr or Miss. Other titles such as Knightghoods and lordships are appointed by either governments or are hereditory. having said that, various websites make money by selling obscure titles and such things.
to clear up the doctor issue - a PhD means you can call yourself doctor. Medical doctors (including GPs) are people who have graduated from medical school (with MBBS or MBBCh) - doctor is indeed an honorary title. The ones who revert to Mr or Miss are only surgeons, who have passed the Royal College of Surgeons exam (MRCS or FRCS, which are post-grad exams). Thus a hospital consultant who is not a surgeon is still called Dr.
