Good Morning,
Colin and Jess have lived most of their lives in our current home - as you know we are moving soon and really don't know how to introduce them to the new house.
We were thinking of taking them there before furniture is moved in to let them have a good sniff around.
We are putting them into doggy prison when the removal men turn up and then will bring them into the new house when we sort out the furniture.
Has anyone moved home with established dogs and any tips?
I would take them there before you move in and make it a 'fun' place to visit. Maybe go for a nice walk, visit the house, have a few treats for them and let them have a good sniff around. It may be a good idea to take a couple of their toys to the house too. When the time comes for them to move in properly the place will be familiar.
Yes, I have - twice. We just took them to our new home, made sure all the doors to the outside were closed - apart from those to the garden - and with lots of reassurance from us - and food and water in their new 'spot', let them find their own way around. They didn't take long to settle. I think as long as you're there, they're happy.
I've moved home a few times with different dogs in my long life and never had a problem. All but one have been over long distances so the day we moved in was their first visit and they all took it in their stride. Mostly excited at a new place and new experiences I think.
Cats however, not so easy. Quite put out at my cheek of daring to move them.
Thanks Ladies, the cats are not so bad as the old girls don't go out and Brice is happy as long as he can hunt!!
When we get the keys we will take them with us - hopefully once the furniture is in it won't take them long to settle in.
Do keep the cats in for several days, won't you. Even though they don't usually go out they're more likely than dogs to freak in a new place and run away.
Mine have moved so often they never know where they are living! Also spent many days in holiday accommodation or overnight accommodation for shows etc. This weekend we have two nights away in different places. As long as they get fed and exercised they are quite happy.
Thanks all, my husband has called me a bampot for worrying considering the dogs come on holiday with us all the time and settle well after the first 24 hours.
But I appreciate all the advice.
