I haven't worked for a while - I am 51yrs and can't face going back to work in an office plus the thought of working in retail does not appeal either. I entered a Job Centre which was horrible and offputting as everything is computerised with loads of 'young' people scrambling for jobs.

Is there somewhere I can go for advice. My confidence isn't great plus I am confused. I feel I am in a rut. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

you could try www.direct.gov.uk and check out New Deal 50 Plus for ways to get back into work

i know you said you dont fancy working in retail but there are a couple of options that may interest you. the large diy chains and supermarkets both have a policy of employing the over 50's as they have said that the young people of today are morons i.e they are leaving school barely literate and numerate. both options are not as bad as working in a stuffy office or highstreet shop etc.

you could also consider a garden centre if you enjoy the outdoor life and gardening.

Hi Health,
I am younger than you buy one year hah! and in the same situation, the first thing you shoud do is belive in yourself, remember the words 'Think big and your deeds will grow, think small and your deeds will fall' take a computer course it's easer than you think, I heard a guy of 80 yrs old was looking for the local computer course center in my area, 'How about that' you are better that that, get out there and strut your stuff! try DXinone.com if you have a few quid, not easy, but loads of help around on the net with good profits and you can do it from home with $50 investment I am doing it!
